This Is Grace

“Let your conversation be always full of grace, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how to answer everyone” (Colossians 4:6Colossians 4:6
English: World English Bible - WEB

6 Let your speech always be with grace, seasoned with salt, that you may know how you ought to answer each one.

, NIV 2011).

We have a small house on a nearby lake that we use for a retreat and often offer to ministers and ministries to use. Last week, Ken, our area director for CMDA, was going to take his family there for a weekend. I had been having electrical problems with the boat and had asked our local boat repair expert, Dannie, to check it out and have it ready for Ken. On the Friday before, we had been given full assurances it would be so. Starting Thursday I began calling to check—no answer, for two straight days. I was frustrated and angry, assuming Dannie was ignoring my calls out of laziness and procrastination. Friday, when Ken arrived, the boat was not working. Ken called me and told me the shop was closed. A sign on the door left a phone number. Dannie’s sister answered the phone number and told me that Dannie’s son, recently graduated from high school, had been crushed between two tractors at his work place and was in intensive care with a torn aorta.

Sleepy

“And we, who with unveiled faces all reflect the Lord’s glory, are being transformed into his likeness with ever-increasing glory which comes from the Lord…” (2 Corinthians 3:182 Corinthians 3:18
English: World English Bible - WEB

18 But we all, with unveiled face beholding as in a mirror the glory of the Lord, are transformed into the same image from glory to glory, even as from the Lord, the Spirit.

, NIV 1984).

Every morning I verbally surrender my life to God: “All I am, all I have, all my dreams, all my plans, all those I love.” The key word is verbal since this prayer includes a whole lot of stuff I continue to grasp to myself. One particular holdout that I have not been able to relinquish is my desire to get enough sleep. If I get less than seven hours at night, I am grumpy and unkind the next day. In fact, if it looks like I may not get enough sleep one night, I start being stressed and unkind the night before. Not good for a doctor who has taken night call all his life.
Well, yesterday I was so time-stressed that I woke up at 3:30, couldn’t sleep, got up and began work to catch up. But this time I told the Lord, “I give you my sleepiness today and I will not take it back.” I was certainly sleepy all day, but the stress and anger and unkindness that usually goes with my lack of sleep was gone.

Excluding the spiritual from patient care: what is the NMC up to?

The views expressed do not necessarily reflect those of CMF.

In some ways, it speaks of the nature of our times that we have created a special category of care and labeled it ‘spiritual’.  In truth, all nursing and medical care has recognised that spiritual needs exist and need to be paid attention to as part of the proper care of any patient.  These spiritual needs are variously defined, but essentially we would all recognise them: the need for significance, the need for forgiveness, connectedness and relationship, the need for purpose and meaning. This was so implicit, that along with good hygiene, cleanliness, warmth, physical safety and diet (amongst others), it was an integral part of care in such a manner that it did not need separating out.

We thank CMDA for allowing us to reprint this devotional.

“As he neared Damascus on his journey, suddenly a light from heaven flashed around him” (Acts 9:3Acts 9:3
English: World English Bible - WEB

3 As he traveled, it happened that he got close to Damascus, and suddenly a light from the sky shone around him.

, NIV 2011).
I misunderstood him when he first spoke, “He’s real!”
I had to ask him to repeat; the phone connection was unclear.
“I heard you last week.” He repeated, “He’s real. I was driving down the road and suddenly I knew that God is real; and now He is in my life, just like you said.”
